Servant Evangelism
The Apostle Paul instructs us that 'God's kindness is meant to lead us to repentance' (Romans 2:4); that is, when disconnected people experience the kindness and grace and mercy of God, this new 'god-experience' breaks through the barriers they have built up towards God and leads them into a brand new life! But how are people to experience the kindness of God in practical ways? Through his people acting with intentional kindness and grace.
Christ the Redeemer is committed to living such a life among the men, women and children of our community. That is, we are committed to 'serving people with the love of Christ in very surprising and practical ways with no-strings attached.' Each phrase of that statement is important: We are called to SERVE energized, motivated, and empowered with the LOVE of Christ; and to do so in SURPRISING - that is, 'graced' - and PRACTICAL ways meeting real needs of people, with NO-STRINGS attached (we do things for 'free' with no expectation of gain). When we live this way, we believe that we participate with God in extending his kindness and thus, we trust, engendering 'repentance' and newness of life among many.
But how do we learn to live this way?
We believe that those who are more gifted and experienced in such living can encourage and support others who desire to learn to live it. We are committed to offering 'Servant Evangelism' training and projects to help people 'get their feet wet' and discover the joy in serving. In the recent past we have volunteered to replace batteries in smoke alarms in the apartments surrounding ODU, offered a 'free lunch' to international students preparing for final exams, picked up trash on the streets in our neighborhood, served with ForKids in the renovation of several of their homes for the homeless, participated in Serve the City with several other churches in acts of kindness to the residents of the neighborhoods surrounding ODU.
Each member of Christ the Redeemer is committed to leading such a life.
Each group within Christ the Redeemer is committed to participate in such projects.
We invite you to join in on the fun and make a real difference in your community.
