Our History
In August 2004, a small body of believers began praying for those in and around the city of Norfolk, Virginia. Some of us felt called to plant a new church that would be - among many other things - loving, biblically faithful, spirit filled, and radically mission minded. Southeastern Virginia, with a population of 1.6 million, is home to a large population of un-churched and spiritually disconnected people.
Following a winter conference of the Anglican Mission in America (AMiA), Rev. Brian Campbell and his family independently began to sense a call to plant a church. Brian was a priest in a mainstream denomination for a suburban church in Florida. We were amazed when Brian contacted a number of his friends in Norfolk, including those in this group. We all agreed to pray for discernment as to where God might be leading us.
In Spring of 2005, God blessed us with confirmation that we should continue to seek His will in planting a church. A shared Anglican heritage offered the following traits for this new work:
- Biblical
- Creedal
- Sacramental
- Ordered
- Missional
On October 31, 2005 Christ the Redeemer began worshiping weekly on Sunday mornings at a local school. We currently worship in a small warehouse.
The ministry of Christ the Redeemer begins locally. However, we also have a regional and global perspective. We are affiliated with the Anglican Communion through the Anglican province of Rwanda (or the L’eglise Episcopal au Rwanda), which is conducting missionary work in the United States as the AMiA.
Thus, Christ the Redeemer is a body of believers called to plant a new church in the city of Norfolk, Virginia, in the center of Hampton Roads, with a heart to reach people in this region and beyond, and to welcome them into the Kingdom of God.
